Getting an XP PC and a printer to work like a Jetdirect

Guest

I'm trying to set up a PC and printer, to allow printing from a VMS (unix
like) system to the printer attached to the pc. Normally from the VMS box we
can print to an IP address and port 9100 on a Jet direct. Is there a way to
set up the pc to accept connections on port 9100 and print like a jet direct
to a locally attached printer?

No. (well there is but someone would need to write some software and you
can purchase it.)

You can use the LPD Service on XP to print to port 515.

Install Print Services for Unix. Change the TCP/IP Printer server to
automatically start on boot. Add port 515 as a firewall exception.

The Unix machine will also need to support LPR.

Will the windows tcpip print services accept an inbound connection on port
515 then? or is there a way to use LPR instead of port 9100?

The Windows LPD service will only accept inbound data on 515.

So to set this up, just enable the service, and open port 515? Then I assume
I use the IP address of the PC to print to. Would the queue name be the
printer name under windows?

Thanks

If the target machine is using a static address go with that. If you have
DHCP use the machine name. The queue name is the share name; you can use
the printer name but you'll need to "" the entry in Windows if there is a
space in the printer name, I do not know how your client handles this.

On XP the service will start when installed but it is set to Manual. The
next time you reboot (or loss power), you need to start the service. If you
are relying on this service set it to start automatically.
