can't add intranet printer

I am a newbie to both networks and routers, so may be overlooking
something very simple.. but I have spent days researching and testing
without success.

I added a new laptop [win XP Media Center] with built-in wifi so also
bought a US Robotics 5461 WiFi router with 4 ethernet ports and a USB
printer port [not planning on using that right now]

I have a legacy HP Laserjet 5 printer, currently connected to my XP
desktop via LPT1.

I added a J4100A JetDirect ethernet card to the printer so it would
connect directly to the LAN/WAN, so as to not require an intermediary
computer

JetDirect ethernet card specs:
J4100A
firmware Rom: K.08.08[04?] with a eeprom which i flashed to K.08.49
[the latest version available] - on self test it reports "I/O CARD
READY" which HP says indicates it is installed and working [though
settings may not be right?]

Set up is:
Webstar cable modem -> 8-port switch -> win98 comp, and the USR router
The router assigned itself to 192.168.2.1
it assigned 192.168.2.2 to my XP desktop box via ethernet cable
it assigned 192.168.2.3 to the laptop computer via wifi
it assigned 192.168.2.4 to the laserjet printer via ethernet cable

I am able to access the printer via browser to http://192.168.2.4 to
set the configuration. I also downloaded the latest JetDirect
firmware and successfully installed it.

smooth sailing so far.. then i tried to add this 'net printer' to both
my XP and the laptop, it failed.

First, I did not see the printer as being available on either
computer.. was i supposed to setup a local network first somehow?

When i tried to add the printer by URL: [ http://192.168.2.4 ], I got
this error message:

"Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was
typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to
the server. For more information, click help."

'help' didn't :\

From my reading, i gathered that HP used port 9100 for internet
printing, so i tried adding the printer as URL:

That caused a pause and then the laserjet printed a sheet with:

POST / HTTP/1.1
Content-Type: application/ipp
User-Agent: Internet Print Provider
Host: 192.168.2.4:9100
Content-Length: 114
Connection: Keep-Alive
Pragma: no-cache

this was followed by a new line with some smiley face symbols and what
appears to be formatting commands for 'attributes-charset,
attributes-natural-language, etc..

Since I can access and admin the printer with my browser from my XP
box, and since it appears to be able to send the code to activate
printing, I assume that there are no firewall blockages interfering,
and that the printer is ready and waiting.

I think my problem is getting my win computers to be able to
communicate via IPP to this 'internet printer'.

I am confused over some of the terminology and syntax.

The laserjet config has these setting:

TCP configuration type: DCHP
-- [other available options are 'manual' and BOOTP'
Current Host Name: NEWPC
Current IP: 192.168.2.4
Current subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Current Gateway: 192.168.2.1
enabled protocol stacks: TCP/IP, DCL/LLC, IPX/SPX, EtherTalk
-- [the latter 3 unneeded afaik, and to be disabled]

It also has a setting for SNMP "Community Name" but it does not show
what it is set to, perhaps the default 'public'? What is this? the
same as what MS calls a 'Workgroup'? is it used in any way as part of
the add printer syntax?

The WiFi network as a 'Network Name' [SSID] - is this then the
'workgroup name? is it part of the 'add printer' syntax? Do the
wired computers/printer on the router also become part of that network
identified by the SSID?

Are their settings in needed XP to enable internet printing? the 'add
printer' dialog sent some datagrams but maybe that was not checked as
a normal print command would be?

I don't think HP supports IPP printing,

Use the Standard TCP/IP port to 192.168.2.4

had a similar problem with a jeddirect 615n on a 2300d, redownload the
printer drivers from hp and reinstall. When installing select network
loctation and the driver package will seek out the printer itself or
let you key in the IP address.
