General AV, firewall ???

Have a new system running XP. It came with AVG(free edition) and I have ZA
Pro.
I have, in the past, always used Norton AV and wondering if I should load
NAV or keep AVG.
Instead of using Windows XP firewall I have been using ZA Pro for several
months.
It's also time to update NAV on another system and wondering if I should
delete and install AVG.

Guess I'm looking for advise on the "best" combination.

There is no definitive answer for this. It depends on what you like and
what your system is happy with. If it works well on your system and
doesn't hog resources then use it. For free AV there is Avast and AVG.
Both work well and I use them both. NAV works well as an AV product
if your system is happy with it, but it is heavier on resource use, and
it's not free. Other top notch pay products are Nod32 and Kaspersky.

For firewall I would stay away from the suites such as Norton internet
security and similar offerings from other companies. Both Sunbelt
Software's Kerio firewall and Zone Alarm have free versions that work well.

People will be recommending that you keep AVG and dump NAV. The only problem
I see is that the only option for AVG support offered to AVG Free is the web
forum.


ZA Pro is extremely better than XP Sp2 firewall and should remain.

Norton sucks. I like Avast better than AVG. Get it at www.avast.com.
Keep the ZA Pro.

I just checked my setting and have AVG and ZA Pro scanning e-mail. It's
working but I've read where I should just have one or none scanning incoming
e-mails, outgoing is off.
Windows XP and Za Pro have firewalls "on".
Again, understand this isn't necessary even though everything is working.

Help/suggestions with setting for AV and ZA Pro and/or NAV and ZA

Turn off email scanning in both. The resident AV protection will cover
it. Email scanning is known to cause problems particularly with OE and
doesn't really give you much in the way of additional protection.

Most folks here will recommend AVG (or almost anything else except perhaps
McAfee) over Norton.

Good. Unlike the Windows firewall which monitors incoming traffic only, ZA
(Pro or free) monitors traffic in both directions and is superior.

Unfortunately when it comes to questions like this, all you get is opinions,
not facts about what's "best." "Best" is in the eye of the beholder. But ZA
Pro and AVG is a good combination, although I perosnally use ZA free and
AVast.

Current version ZA Pro and NAV 2004 seem a good combination on XP/ME/98SE on
this PC.
Suggest AdSubtract Pro and Trend Micro AntiSpyware as added protection.

The NAV email scanner strips the infected attachment before it gets in the
users mailbox. That's the whole idea behind a proxy scanner for email.
That's the additional protection. I consider this a very substantial asset.
Not sure how ZA Pro's mail scanner works though.

You don't need the email scanning. It causes significant problems with
OE and even Symantec in their documentation on line says it's not needed.

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will responses.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without
any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's
been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their
quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by
Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the free
version of Sygate's Personal Firewall
(http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have proven to be
easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I was
pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in
my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product.

FYI Bruce, since Sygate's personal firewall was bought out by Symantec
that link now connects to Symantec's offering.
