AV Program

I have Windows Defender, and running XP Pro, IE7 - is Avast and/or AVG still
good AV freeware programs? Avast just popped up that it's expiring soon -
had no idea the home ed. would do that.

Thank you.

Avast isn't going anywhere AFAIK. You do have to re-register annually
though. Are you sure you didn't see a re-register message?

Thank you.

If it's been over a year, you will need to register Avast again. If it's
a new version (green pop up), just install it. In both cases, no money
is required.

I looked at the warning again, and on their site one has to search for the
re-registration ...

I found AVG easier (more user-friendly) if it's still freeware, and you all
think it's equal - can't find the free one though.

Let me know your' opinions.

thank you all

Right click on the Avast icon in the SysTray | Left Click: About Avast |
Expand: Technical Support | Double click on Where To Register and you're
there.

I used to use AVG and it worked OK, but you had to schedule updates where
with Avast, they come at any time automatically. I don't know if AVG version
* does this, but I am confident it is better than V: 7.5.

AVG ( http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe ) is far more user
friendly than Avast. To be honest I much prefer AVG to Avast but, like most
things, it is a personal choice.

I think I agree -

I use adaptive software and with AVAST I'm never quite sure things are all
current, so open it up each day and do it manually. ;-))

Thank you.

Avast catches more viruses than AVG. See the test results at

I personally would not use either.

sounds like a well-written marketing document

I just cleaned a friend's system of 6 trojans and ? viruses, almost lost the
DeskTop - their high priced AV didn't catch them, One Care quarantined 3
Trojans, and cleaned the viruses, but TrendMicro's Housecall removed
everything and more. HiJack, and 3 others were evaluated and all's well -
and I'm blind!

If you look at the tables, it show "Treatment" after the infection has
already occurred on the system. There is nothing in these tables about
"Stopping" the infection or finding the virus before the system is infected.

Why ask here? Neither of these is part of XP, or even provided in any

Ask elsewhere

But they are general questions correctly asked in a general newsgroup.
