User opinions on free AV software

I shall be glad to learn about user opinions on free antivirus software -
Avast, AVG, Anti Vir, ClamWin, BitDefender (Win) .....

Two XP PCs in the family will need AV software very soon as Norton currently
installed will be expiring on both. Those licenses will not be renewed.
Norton opens too many processes by itself!

I have done some reading on them using Google search. I am looking to hear
actual user opinions here!

Regards and thanks very much in anticipation.

So, it's worked fine, but it runs to many processes, and that's your
justification?

Since none of the "Free" products appear to protect as well, why risk
it. I'm not a fan of the bloat of Norton Products, but I've never had a
compromised computer while it was working, and I can say that I've seen
compromised computers running AVG.

And I've seen PCs rendered useless by Norton/Symantec products, and the
PC never had a virus, and I've seen other PCs with NAV that have been
infected and cleaned up with the "free" products!

Symantec sucks. Symancrapophants are the last ones to figure it out.

Nothing too much wrong with some of the free AV software, such
as Grisoft AVG. Certainly not as intrusive as Norton/Symantec.
Perhaps better support in that anti-virus definitions are updated
on pretty much a daily basis. But take note that none of the AV
applications are absolutely perfect. For backup, it is always
possible to do an on-line scan using HouseCall from TrendMicro.

Thanks very much for the responses.

We are asking opinions locally too, and shall make a decision soon.

I have nothing against Norton but nowadays their products, and not just
Antivirus, seem so bloated and intrusive. They also slow down systems. And
sometimes play havoc with other installed software.

Regards and thanks again.
