Zone Alarm problem

B

Bill Watt

Systemax Notebook with XP Pro. On Broadband wireless from my PC that
is using Win98 SE.
Had a problem on the Notebook with Zone Alarm. IE and Firefox would
not go on the Net. The settings were correct in ZA to allow both
browsers to access the Net and it's been working OK. All was OK then
I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks. When I got back I had the
problem on the first boot. I've been using ZA for a long time with
no problems until now.

The only way for the browsers to get on the net is to exit ZA, then
all is ok.

I uninstalled ZA and downloaded it from the ZA site and installed
it. It installed but I get this error so it doesn't load.

" The procedure point isadmin could not be located in the Vsutil.dll
file".

Isadmin seems to work with the Vsutil.dll file".

What I found with Google on Vsutil.dll did not seem to help with
this problem. Other than it seems to be a ZA file and I have many of
them.

I have run an AV scan with AVG that is updated.. All is ok.
I have searched the group.
Is there another free Firewall program that is good ?

Would appreciate any ideas.

Bill Watt

What do they say at ZoneAlarm - the forums, FAQs, etc?

See if this helps:
Check your Internet Connection Sharing settings in ZA
1. Open ZA
2. Click Firewall (left pane)
3. Click Advanced button (below)
4. Under Internet Connection Sharing, tick the radio button "This computer
is a client of an ICS/NAT gateway ruunning ZA Pro.
5. click OK

What version ZA are you running? When you reinstalled it, did you do an
upgrade or a clean install? Usually, when ZA is having problems, it is best
to do a clean install. That way any settings that are inadvertently hosed
will be reset.
After the installation, look under Firewall / Zones, and check that your IP
for the router is there, and that there are entries for DHCP server, DNS
server, and loopback adapter. Loopback is 127.0.0.1. Your other settings are
determined by your router.

P.S. Sorry about your stay in the hospital. I hate being there 3-1/2
minutes, even if it's for something good.

I shut ZA down and the browsers worked. I stopped it from loading
and rebooted and the browsers failed. Uninstalled it and the
browsers worked. Downloaded the latest ZA from the site and it
failed to install with the Vsutil.dll file error. Uninstalled that
one and all is well. I have prior ZA downloads so I'm going to try
an older one.

Bill,

I stopped using ZA due to problems and bloat - it's turned into another
Norton.

I switched over to Online Armor, Free Edition - works well and I
recommend it. I've installed on on about ten PC's with success.

I had checked those settings with the help from my ISP, they were
ok.

Yes, no fun there. I was trying to install ver 8.298.000 from the
site after my older ZA failed to allow browsing. I uninstalled and
re-installed ver 6.1.744.001. The install worked and all is well
now.

Thanks for the info.

Reply inline.

Huh? Is the XP box connecting via the Win98 box or...?

Hi Bear, you do get around. :)
The PC is connected to the cable modem and the wireless Belkin in
connected to that. The Notebook runs on wireless. No Network.
(I've tried :-( )

I've Installed ver 6.1.744.001 and all is well.

I'm surprised the newer version didn't work. You could try the latest from
here:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/information/zass/releaseHistory.html

9.1.008.000 is the newest, and should work fine on XP Pro. I use it with my
XP Home and Windows 7 with no problems. Unless it's a problem with the Win98
installation.

Yes, I see it. You can't be too far away. I find them to be very
good.

Lousy day here today, no golf. :)

I think, the problem now is too many Vsutil.dll files, there are many
more than on the Win98 PC. I could start re-naming them several at a
time but then more installing etc. I'll save your post and try the
URL if needed.
