Best free firewall?

Hey guys,

I haven't been reading these groups often, but was wondering what the best
*free* firewall is nowadays. I used to use ZA Free for years- However,
since ZA 7 has become a system wrecker (and I'm not alone- Unfortunately
7.0.337 seems to be even worse) I was wondering if there's something out
there equally intuitive and effective. I understand software changes fast
and there may be a new best product. I use a FW 24/7 and no AV.

Suggestions please!

Thanks :)

I installed this recently. It asked me the same question a gazillion times
and thought everything was "virus like behavior". Talk about crying wolf.

PowerUser,

I recommend Comodo Firewall Pro. I would also strongly recommend to
install an AV. Avast, AVG and Avira has free but very good AV
versions...

Stick with ZAF. Their older version 4.5.594 still works great. Or stick
with the last good version 6.5.737.

Yup. 6.5.737 was great, but firewall software needs to be kept up to date as
well right? BTW, I actually I've already tried what you mentioned, went
back to 6.5.737. It swiftly starts downloading and installing the update
without any consent, unless you turn off automatic updates immediately after
installing it. I knew version 7 was bad when it rebooted and my computer
BSODed. I had to get into safe mode to get it off the system. I did run
6.5.737 after disabling the update feature, but was looking for more secure
possibilities. I guess I'll just use the old version till they fix 7.x.

A side note: IIRR, Version 3.2.<something> was really good too. It was
around then that Blaster infected millions of PCs. ZA users were not
affected though.

I've always found the Windows Firewall to be plenty.

I've played around with most everything out there... dumped 'em all
over the last few years and am happy with XP's.

Particularly if it's behind a NATS router as well....

I don't dispute the efficacy of the Windows Firewall. However, I need the
ability to easily Allow or Deny applications from accessing the net-
Including good ones. Also, I like to know if and when certain things are
trying to call back home. This is rather cumbersome with the inbuilt
firewall- Maintaining the exception list would just be a waste of time.

I am using a router plus Kerio 2.1.5.
