Freezing up!!

I am trying to run Windows XP Pro on my computer though I am not very
successful at it so far. Since I bought the os I have had to reinstall it 11
times. It just won't stay stable for me. Last week after freezing up on my
for a period of two weeks, it didn't restart. So there goes the 11th reboot.
I though that would clear the problem, but it is freezing up on my again. It
freezes up in just about any program that I use.

I have downloaded and installed all of the updates numerous times. I've also
noticed that after my computer freezes up and has to be shut down hard, the
checkdisk does not kick in to verify the disk before fully loading everything.

Can some one please help me with this problem?

Hi

Are there any error messages when the system freezes and have you had a look
in the Event Viewer to see if any entries there point towards the problem?

It sounds like you have failing hardware. Since you haven't told us
anything about your computer, I can't be more specific. Here are
general hardware troubleshooting steps:

1) Open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing). Obviously
you can't do this with a laptop, but you can hear if the fan is running
and feel if the laptop is getting too hot.

2) Test the RAM - I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org - let the test
run for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately.

3) Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the mftr.

4) The power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for the devices
you have in the system - this isn't applicable to a laptop, of course.

5) Test the motherboard with something like TuffTest from
www.tufftest.com.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).

Just out of curiosity, do you have a printer attached to your computer via the parallel (LPT) port?

Hard freezes are usually the result of a bad hardware or hardware driver. I would definitely test the memory as recommended in another post. Assuming you're running a desktop system, find the make and model of motherboard in your computer. You'll want to visit the motherboard manufacturer's web-site for the latest hardware drivers. If that doesn't solve the problem, you'll want to return to motherboard manufacturer's web-site for the latest BIOS and flash it to your board.

Check to ensure all of your hardware is listed on Microsoft's compatability
list. Some unlisted hardware will work while others won't. It's really
hit-or-miss. RuZZ
