Forever to boot

P

Phil

Hi,
I'm running Vista on aHP laptop and it takes forever to boot up. I don't
know of anything that is installed that would slow it down so much. I do
have Nortons and a wireless mouse and keyboard.
Can anyone tell me what to look for that might speed up the boot time? I
know it's a lot slower that when I got the laptop a year ago.
Thanks,
Phil

This is normal for Windrones, especially when you've got a POS anti
virus program like Norton installed. It's called Win Rot and will happen
with Windows 7 as well. If you want an operating system that doesn't
have this problem and needs no anti virus, check out Ubuntu at
http://www.ubuntu.com/. It's free and comes with access to thousands of
free programs.

I gave competent advice. It's too bad you are too closed minded to take it.

You just proved that you are a liar. I hope you enjoy watching your
install of Vista go slower and slower until it rewards your loyalty with
a BSOD and not be able to boot.

Hi Phil. Do you have the hardware specs of the laptop handy you could
post? Did Vista come pre-installed on this laptop when you bought it?

While it's not a fix to get your Vista going, Ubuntu is far from the worst
O/S on earth. And 'everyone' doesn't know that anyway.

On the otherhand, What everyone does know is that changing the

Hi Phil--

The advice you got to go after malware and spyware on a regular basis is
good advice. Norton is probably not impacting your boot time atall. It's
not my favorite, and you might want to look closely at MSFT's successor to
One Care (code named Morro based on Forefront for the end user when it
releases soon).

Try checking your services by going to services.msc in the run box. Check
your processes running. Most people have processes starting they don't need
and stopping services you don't need goes a long way toward helping speed
your system and your boot Defrag regularly. If you have services starting
you don't need, they will impact your boot. You can go to msconfig's startup
tab, and eliminate items starting that you don't need to start up. If you
need them, they'll turn on when you call up the app(s).

You can google for a definition of services and processes on Vista to match
against what you need to run.

Luckily BV is up and running again:

Click on the links for Service Configurations. They can be an invaluable
help.

Also, and this is unconventional but true, MSFT portrays Startup Repair as a
remedy to fix systems that won't boot. That's the official party line. But
in fact, it can fix problems that are major, and while it's not to be used
as a panacea, it can be useful. There's no downside to trying it.

If you don't have a Vista DVD,

Download Vista Repair Disk
