Sleeping my Laptop takes forever

I have a IBM Thinkpad and when I close the lid the computer beeps until it
goes to sleep. In XP it would take about 5 beeps max to sleep. Vista takes
around 20 beeps during which time there's a ton of HD activity. I disabled
hybrid sleep as this is a laptop but still vista takes forever to sleep.
Thanks for any suggestions

How did you disable hybrid sleep? It certainly seems like it is still
writing out the memory contents.
