Print Spooler service prevents laptop from going into standby

I'm running Win XP Pro and Office 2003 on my laptop. The
machine's about a year old, and up until a week ago, I
had no problems with putting the machine into standby--
just close the lid, and the machine goes to sleep.

Now it will no longer go into standby. It stays running
with the lid closed. When I open it again, there's a
dialog box that says "The service "Print Spooler" is
preventing the machine from entering standby. Try
stopping this service and try again." When I stop the
print spooler service, it will go into standby, but it's
a pain stopping and starting that service multiple times
per day.

* All Microsoft updates (drivers included) are up to date

* As far as I know, I've never installed a non-XP
certified driver

* I've tried logging on with a different user profile,
and the problem persists

Suggestions to fix this will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chuck Murphy

You didn't mention the printer that you have installed on the computer. I had a similar problem with a lexmark driver installed on a W2K PRO laptop. The driver wraps itself around the spooler. I fixed it by following the instructions in the following KB article (Q155516). The Article indicates that it applies only to NT but it worked for W2K Pro.
