Firewall stoping and starting

Hi,

I’m having a problem with my firewall stopping and starting on its own. It
started when I removed Norton Anti Virus that had come pre-installed. I
decided to go with AVG which I had been using previously. Since that time,
the firewall stops and displays a popup warning, then within a minute, starts
again on its own.

I’m sure it has something to do with Norton having been uninstalled, but I
can’t figure out what is causing it. Win XP Home SP2

Any help would be appreciated.

Norton products also install their own security monitoring facility. It
appears in Add/Remove programs as Symantec WMI. You should
remove it along with Live Update and Live Reg.
Unfortunately, even with those steps your PC will still have pieces of
Norton left on it. ( Non Plug-&-Play Drivers and orphaned Services).

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I have already removed them. I'm
sure there are pieces of Norton somewhere, but I have failed to find them.

I guess this is there punishment for uninstalling their product. Not very
professional of them.

You can completely remove all traces of Norton by downloading the SymNRT.exe
file from their web site.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005103109480139

When I ran it the removal was total, after re-installing Norton the
subscription date was as if I had installed a new copy with a full year plus
on subscription renewal.

Notes:
1) You should also delete any remaining Symantec directories.
2) It has been reported that this utility does not always do a total
removal.
(I suspect that they have changed the removal process to leave certain
subscription keys in place).

Thank you.

I have downloaded the tool and ran it, I will have to wait and see if that
did the trick or not. since the problem is intermittant, it someimes goes
hours without stopiing. I'll report back if it is still giving me problems.

Thanks again.

OK, I ran the uninstall program, but it is still stopping and starting back
up. I don't really want to turn the notification off, just incase it goes
down for any length of time. I would sure like to find an answer though, so
if anyone else has an idea, I'm still interested.

Thank you all for the help so far.

Try Autoruns from SysInternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
This will show all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot and
selectively allow you to stop any that you don't want.

Note: You may need to highlight an item (right click) and use the Google
option on some entries to get the details for more obscure items in the
list.
