new hard drive problem ?

With an IBM laptop –WinXP Pro: I put in a new harddrive and re-installed XP
without any problem, and then tried to re-instal AOL from a disk, and find
that the new hd doesn’t run the modem. I re-installed Word ok for example.
The line to the modem is ok. and the machine is OK. [i’m using it now, with
the old hd] SO: I can’t get online using the new drive to try to get help.
And I can’t figure how to wake up the modem using the new hd while I’m
offline– it acts like it doesn’t have a driver. Any suggestions would
certainly be appreciated. TIA. John

Your modem has nothing to do with the new hard drive. You need to
install the correct drivers for the modem (and other hardware as well).
Get the drivers from IBM/Lenovo's website for your specific model laptop.

Thanx, Malke: and I don't mean to argue, but I don't understand: If my modem
works ok when I use the old hd - as I'm now doing, doesn't that indicate
that the modem driver is present in the machine, and is working - and if,
while using the same machine, the modem will not work when I switch to the
new hd, doesn't that point to the new hd ?

No it means all the drivers and win registry entries for the same are on
your old hd, your new hd is completely bare untill you install win and
drivers on it.
Or to put it another way your IBM PC is a paperweight untill you install
win, apps and drivers

"I agree that you have to be careful abou"

Thanks for your response, DL - I think that I understand: Bearing in mind
that I cannot get online with the new hd, can you suggest how I should go
about getting the new modem driver for the new hd ? Is it something that I
can download to the old hd from IBM\Lenovo and then copy to the new hd ?

Go to a friend or a local computer shop with Internet access and
download the drivers. Burn them to a cd-r. Or look in the stuff you got
with the laptop (if you still have it). There might even be a driver
disk there.
