System Crash

Can somebody please help me fix my computer! I’m running XP Home Version 2002
with service pack 2. Although service pack 3 had automatically downloaded.
Maybe it’s a coincidence but it’s around the same time that the problem
started!
Id been having a few program crashes but nothing major. About 3 weeks ago I
set the computer to run an error check on the next restart. The next time I
turned the computer on the CHILDSK started but it couldn’t get past stage 1.
All I kept getting was this
CHILDISC is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)
File 15644 is unreadable 33254
File 15645 -.- 33255
-.- 15646 -.- 44668
-.- 15647 -.- 44669
-.- 25364 -.- 44670
-.- 25364-. -.- 44671
-.- 25366 -.- 48116
-.- 25367 -.- 48117
33252 -.- 48118
33253 -.- 48119

File verification completed.

I finally managed to skip CHILDSK and get back into windows but now the
problem of crashes is terminal. Nothing is working properly. The computer is
extremely slow and can’t be used as it crashes after 2 minutes. To the extent
the mouse doesn’t even respond and the only option left is to reboot.
Norton live update crashes, I can’t run CHILDSK I don’t even get the option
to get into safe mode, F8 during start up does nothing. F9 xpress recovery
does nothing. System restore won’t work when I try defragging the hard drive
it crashed at 15% analysing.
I’ve got the original windows cd and can boot from this but it takes me to
the DOS window and I don’t know what to do from there.
The computer is about 3 years old, I don’t think the hard drive is corrupt
as I wasn’t really having any problems till all this started.
It’s an AMD ATHLON 64 NTFS file system. I have 1GBof RAM, a capacity of
190GB 13.6GB used and 176GB free (92%file space)
Is service pack 3 causing the problem? And if it is how do I get rid of it
and get back to the service pack 2? If it’s not service pack 3 then what is
the problem and how do I fix it??

Retrieve your data if you haven't already backed up. In cases like yours I
like to do this with Knoppix, which is a Linux Live CD. Aside from the
ability to copy the data onto an external hard drive, using Knoppix also
tells me if the problem is hardware or Windows (software). Obviously if the
machine behaves perfectly under Linux, you will then know that Windows is
corrupt. If the machine exhibits the same symptoms under Linux, you will
then know that the problem is hardware.

If the problem is hardware, it's probably your hard drive. Hard drives can
die at any time. Test the drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from
the drive mftr.'s website. You will create a bootable CD with the file you
download. You will need third-party burning software to do this such as
Roxio, Nero, or the free CDBurnerXP Pro. Burn as an image, not as data.

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails
any physical tests, replace it.

If the problem is software, you can try to uninstall Service Pack 3 or
contact Microsoft for free SP3-related help. Otherwise do a clean install
of Windows. Do not install any programs until you've installed SP3. Do not
install Norton anything on the new install. I recommend NOD32 (commercial)
or Avast (free) and the built-in Windows Firewall.

sometimes anti virals
like norton and mcafee
prevent the o.s. from
being updated and they
don't let you know anything.

what you may have to
do is to uninstall the
anti virus's first.

however, the issue you
seem to have at this time
is that your operating system
is locked up and can't
do anything with it.

so the next step would
be to regain access to
your system via the disk
system.

to do the above, you will
need to boot up with any
windowsxp installation cd,
initialize the repair console
and run the commands like

chkdsk /p
fixboot
fixmbr

let us know what you think
with the above.

Your problem is most like NOT a hard drive failure. It seems you have a very
large boot partition, please read this
http://www.randem.com/discus/messages/9402/9406.html?1236319938 perhaps it
will help.
