Unable to send large e-mails

I’ll try to be concise. Basically, I’m running under XP with SP2. I usually
use Outlook to send my e-mail. I’m on a cable modem.

Suddenly, a few days ago, I was unable to send e-mails 1MB or over. My
server (Cox) allows up to 10MB (although I rarely sent much larger that 3MB)
I kept getting a Norton error message #1003,9 stating that the e-mail didn’t
go through and try to re-send. Re-sending didn’t work. Small e-mails could
be sent, but nothing around 1MB or larger.

I spoke with my ISP - they had me go online and try to directly send the
same mail from my Webmail account. It sent it without a problem. They said
to talk with Norton.

I spent two days of online chats with Norton. They tried everything
including giving me a free update to the latest version of their Internet
Security package. I still could not send the larger e-mails.

I then tried removing Norton and installed Avast and Zone-alarm. Still
could not send the large emails. Finally, I tried (briefly) to remove all
anti-virus and firewall and see if I could send, but still the emails weren’t
getting through.

Next I tried changing to another e-mail program. I tried with both Outlook
Express and Mozilla Thunderbird, but still was unable to send the larger
e-mails.

Today, a tech came out from my ISP, checked all my wiring and connections,
even tried a new modem, but was not able to resolve the problem. He said the
problem is obviously within my computer when it tries to upload the larger
emails to their server (since I could send it directly from my online Webmail
account). Something is stopping the larger emails from getting to their
server from my computer. By the way, it doesn’t seem to affect me receiving
e-mails, large or small.

Is there a setting somewhere in Windows that somehow could have gotten
changed and could be limiting the size of my outgoing mail? Or do you have
any other ideas of what this could be?

Thanks,
LR Cat

Try increasing the "Server Timeout" to 5 or 10 minutes. It's under
the advanced tab of your Outlook account. If this does not help
then you should ask the experts in an Outlook newsgroup.

1. If you uninstalled your/all Norton software, you'll need to run a removal
tool to rid the machine of all traces of it:

2a. If Avast or another anti-virus application isn't installed, get it/one
installed...NOW!

2b. Disable Email Scanning (outgoing and incoming) by your installed
anti-virus application. It provides no additional protection, it may be
causing the problem, and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

3. I'd recommend uninstalling ZA (Free or Pro) and making CERTAIN that the
Windows Firewall is enabled at all times.

4. You may need to tweak some connection settings (e.g., MaxMTU). Start
with Tweak Tester II here: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Post in a group that relates to your email client. Your problem has
absolutely nothing to do with the OS as XP has ZERO ability to
send/receive email.

Ask elsewhere.
