file association preferences

I use paint shop pro for my jpg viewing. I've tried to
set my jpg file association for paint shop pro through
that program (paint shop pro). It didn't work. When I
click on a jpg file through explorer file manager it
still boots up Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Were do I
go in Windows XP to change my preference to paint shop
pro for jpg viewing.

Right-click the image file, Open With > Choose Program > PaintShop Pro
(enable "Always use the selected program......................file")

on any image file and it open with paint shop pro, not
with window picture and fax. How do I make the global
file association change?

Once you perform the steps, you can double-click the image file to open in PSP. It's a current user setting. Other option is to disable Pic and Fax viewer.

'Preview' will always be the default action for files with a 'perceived type' of 'image' unless you define the preview action for the filetype. If you do that, 'preview' will then be shown in the 'Edit File Type' dialog ('Folder Options' -> 'File Types' tab -> 'Advanced' button) and you can select a different action to be the default without losing all functionality of the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (I like the print wizard, myself .

If you copy all the text between the lines that follow and save it as a ..reg file, then right-click & select 'merge', the preview option will be visible in the 'Edit File Type' dialog for image files.
