Open File Association and Multiple Instances of Program

Hello, I'm having a weird problem. When I open an Image file, such as BMPs,
the paint program (Paint Shop pro) opens it as it should. However, when I
open the same file, or any image file, another instance of Paint Shop Pro
opens. This is an error. The second file should open in the current Pain Shop
Pro application. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? I've tried
uninstalling and re-installing Paint Shop Pro. My Program is LEGAL and not
some pirated copy. On my other Windows PC, I don't have this problem at
all...Please help. Thanks

What makes you think that this is an error? It all depends on how the
program is written. Some programs, e.g. Word or Outlook Express will open
only a single instance of themselves. Others such as Notepad or Outlook will
open multiple instances. MS Paint belongs to the second class and PaintShop
Pro might belong to this class too. If it behaves differently on different
machines then this is perhaps because you have different versions.

The overall question is, of course, why having multiple instances of
PaintShop Pro should be a problem for you. Do you actually see two instances
of PaintShop Pro under the Applications tab of the Task Manager?

No. The program is the same exact version. And it is an error. I will
explain below.

When one instance of Paint Shop pro is open, every time I open an Image
file, another instance of Paint Shop pro opens too. Yes, another instance
appears in the Applications Tab. This makes doing any kind of Work with Paint
Shop pro very difficult because each image file I open is separated to
different instances of PSP.

What should happen is, every Image file I open should be opened in the
current Instance. This is normal behavior.

yes, I agree with
your assessment.

but it seems to me
that this is a setting
that is managed
by paint shop pro.

might be a searchable
criterion and the home
site for the program.

Did you check PaintShop Pro FAQ pages?

I recall something
that might be of some
help.

in file types where you
associate extensions
to programs,

you may have to use
a special switch to
the open command.

don't remember which
switch but its something
like %1 or -1.

you add the switch to
the end of the command
line.

the switch keeps multiple
instances of the program
from opening.

but you need to do some
research for this.

maybe you can review
other extensions that
are set up correctly.

let us know what you
find.

I'm not a PSP user but I posted your question
in a group where there are several regulars
who use PSP and the consensus is the older
versions work like you describe but the newer
versions do not.

Anyway....maybe the following fix posted by
D_Spider would be worth a try:

PSP opening multiple copies

It is a version issue; is this a change after a reinstall or something?
Also you neglected to mention the version of anything, so there's not
enough info to get much of an answer.

Since PSP is not XP or a Microsoft product, you would do better in their
own groups where you'll find programmers, users and occasionally even
the designers. Set up the server 'cnews.corel.com' and then look for
your version of PSP and subscribe to that group. I feel confident
you'll get an accurate and useful response by the next day at the most.
The folks there are very knowledgeable and interested in helping.
They're also very professional; don't be too sarcastic or negative. Be
sure to indicate your OS and version because all OS's are handled there.

HTH,

Twayne`
