Fax services installation

I did not get an XP disk with my computer - is there anyway to install the
Fax Services on my computer without it?

Hi Christine, not much chance I'm afraid. I tried it several times and the
install would stop and ask for certain files which are only present on the
disk. I went so far as to make a list of all the files that are needed and
went a hunting to see if I could download them anywhere (this was before I
had a disk too). I didn't have much luck there either. No, you do need the
XP disk.

Peter

Thanks - I ended up calling Gateway (where I purchased my computer from) and
after a quick peek into my machine, they determined that I did need an
additional disk which they are sending. Thanks for the help though!

Hi Christine, glad to hear that you managed to acquire a disc. Setting up
MS Fax is a doddle, simply go to START > PRINTERS and FAXES and in the left
hand pane click on Set Up Faxing and insert your recovery disc into the
cd/dvd drive. You will have to point the set-up program to the fax files
location (the i386 folder), in your case it will be the drive letter of your
cd/dvd drive. In my case it was a separate partition on my hard drive where
I had copied the contents of my XP disc to. Anyway, after that is where you
will run into problems as I did. I have no idea where to get my fax number
or TSID number (I suspect they are one and the same thing) so if you have
any idea I would appreciate an answer.
Thanks and Good Luck,
Peter

If you bought it at a computer store I would go back and ask for the disk.
If you bought it from another person I would go to them and ask for the disk
as it would be illegal for them to reinstall the same copy of XP onto another
computer.

Worst case, for $199 Canadian you can get an XP registration kit from
Microsoft. I've got one I can't use anymore (or return for a refund
unfortunately) since the computer I bought it for crashed and burned right
after I installed it. Maybe we can talk...lol.

Hi Christine, the problems I spoke of are no more! It turns out that the
fax number or TSID is the same as ones home telephone number. That is if the
faxes are being sent down the same line. I hope this helps.

Oops! Please ignore my earlier post - I'm new to this and just saw your first
post. I also have a Gateway computer and I'm VERY happy with it. It's a
rebuilt notebook with a 17" screen so it has the numeric keypad on the side
- it behaves like a "real" computer!

It did take me a few tries to get all the bugs out of sending faxes. An old
boyfriend who's quite the computer geek suggested putting commas in the fax
number to force pauses and the solved my problem - I've posted to this board
as I'm sure there's a more elegant solution than that!

When you get that CD from Gateway you just go into Control Panel, Add
Programs, Add Windows Components, and check off Fax. From there it's a piece
of cake.

I have a preinstalled Windows XP system and only found out the following
yesterday after some lateral thinking. The following works on XP home only
(as far as I know).

go to control panel>add remove programs and put a tick in the fax services
box. You will then be asked for your Windows disk. Ignore this and carry on
until you get the Windows can't find the file in the directory its searching
in. If you then paste the filename into a search files dialog it should
hopefully find it in C:\WINDOWS\i386. If it is found here then change the
search directory dialog (as in my case) and then it will install the fax
services component for you. (the file you are looking for is called FXCFGWZ
and it should be a DL_file). Once XP has found it and you have installed fax
services, reboot the computer and follow the instructions to set up your fax.
There should be a fax icon in the printers and faxes control panel setting.
