Dell Inspiron 1150, XP Home Edition. Dell 942 PIO printer. Don't use fax
very often, but when I do I really need it. Current with patches/service
packs. Last time I used it no problem.

Now when I click send new fax, modal message box "Fax Printer not Installed.
Make sure it is setup properly" Tools/Printer properties, error is
"Microsoft Shared Fax Printer Driver is not installed on this computer.... do
you want to install it now"
Say Yes, pick my Dell 942 PIO printer. Doesn't affect the problem.

Fax printer status shows it local, and online. Tools/Printer Configuration,
dialog comes up, click Printing Preferences, get dialog box "Operation cannot
be completed".

This computer is used for Internet Browsing, and EMail. Has very little
software installed. My guess is that one of the patches / service packs have
caused this problem, don't really want to un-install patches.

Anyone help with this problem?

You are confusing the Windows "Fax Printer" with your actual hardware
printer. They are not the same.

Try these two tests:

1. Open Notepad, type a few characters, and click File > Print. In the
"Select printer" dialog box, is there an entry that simply says "Fax"?

2. Click Start > Programs or All Programs > Accessories >
Communications. Do you see "Fax" in the list of applications?

For further details, see pages 43-46 of your printer's User Guide.
