Why would you want to save it without the extension? Extensions are the
means whereby Windows allocates applications to open those files. Well
designed software will not allow you to save files without the required
extension. You can probably edit the filename to remove the extension, but I
cannot think of one good reason for doing so.

While I agree with Graham that this is a bad idea, you can save without the
extension if you enclose the filename in quotation marks.

Hmmm. While you can add quotes to use a *different* extension. If you add
quotes around the filename without extension, Word will simply add the
default extension.

Oh, okay. I've never used that feature and obviously remembered it
incorrectly.

When transferring files from Mac to PC (via floppy or CD), the
extensions are simply lopped off -- and Windows graphics programs
can't open them until the extensions are typed back in.
