DOC extension missing when emailing document from word since KB969

Since applying the security update referenced in KB969603 for Word 2003 some
of our corporate template docs no longer have a doc extension when attempting
to email them as attachments from Word (through Outlook.) The documents in
question are not saved prior to attempting to send them as email. Is there
any way to resolve this short of not applying the security update or saving
the documents first?

How can you send them if they're not saved?

Tom,

I think the OP is saying that if a document is created from a certain
template or templates and then the native Word functionality to send the
document as an email attachment is used (File | Send To > Mail Recipient (as
Attachment)...), the document is not attached to the email message as a .doc
file unless the document is saved first. Might be interesting to know what
the format of the file actually is...

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with the problem and, therefore,
don't have an answer, but perhaps one of the other 'wise heads' in here does.
