explorer keeps shutting down and restarting

Hi,
I have a bit of a problem with a computer. XP Home.
explorer.exe keeps restarting every 2 or 3 seconds once I have logged into
any user. It also does the same thing in Safemode but not when using a
startup disc. All users are the same. I have tried a number of things
including:
Checked for Virus - None
Checked for malware - nothing important.
Checked using hijackthis - nothing.
Deleted antivirus program - no change
unticked everything in msconfig> Startup
Uninstalled all microsoft updates from the last 2 months.
I have also just done a Windows repair install but still the same and I have
also added another user - Still the same. Please any other ideas

R.McCarty wrote this below and I have tried everything but it is still the
same.

Based on the TaskMgr entry, you've likely got an issue with a bad
or malfunctioning Explorer Shell Extension. These are items like the
"Scan with...." you see when you right click a folder or file.
If you can get a stable boot of any kind I'd download and run a app
called Shell Extension Viewer. It allows you to locate any non-MS
or 3rd-Party Shell extensions on the machine and disable or delete
entries you don't want.

Alternately if this is a fairly recent change in your system, you might
consider a System Restore to a date prior to when the error started.
And no to your question on RAM it's doubtful that's the cause of
the Explorer faults.

Check the System log of Event Viewer for Error Reports.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or
Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

that is the weird thing. There doesn't seem to be any error messages in
event viewer except for the one.

event 1002. The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
It does this thousands of times but it is the only one.

Another thing happening too. I have just left the PC for a couple of hours.
when I can back the screen was blank, I moved the mouse and the account
login page appeared. I clicked on an account and the screen went black and
the egg timer just stayed on the screen. I Ctrl, Alt, Delete and run
explorer.exe. Nothing happened - still black so I Ended the explorer.exe
process and the background has appeared. That stayed on until I run explorer
again and now we are back to square one.

Please post a complete copy of the report.

Are there Information Reports in the System logs. I only wish to know
whether they are there. I do not need to see copies.

This means that your computer is either hibernating or going to Standby.
It is quite normal for this to happen.

It is on another computer, that is why I shortened the event view but this
is the total paste.

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Winlogon
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1002

Description: The Shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted

thanks Gerry,
I had already done everything relevant on that link but I appreciate the
post.

It was XP home edition with SP2 , about 3 years old with all the usual
updates except the last 2 months that I have deleted since this problem
started.

As is usual with cases like this if you don't get it sorted the first day
then reformat and start again. That is what I have done. It is a pity not to
have found the problem but 3 hours later all the data is back on and the pc
is working fine.
Thanks again.
