Explorer crashes

I didn't get a resonse on this last night -- maybe things got lost in
the traffic.

Windows Explorer closes unexpectedly (with or without wanting to report
back to MS) when I try to open a folder within the "Shared Documents"
folder -- but only in one particular circumstance.

As I understand it, "Shared Documents" is just a folder called
"Documents" in the "All Users" profile with permisions set so that every
user can access it. It also has a hidden desktop.ini file that (at
least) causes it to be displayed as "Shared Documents." In addition, I
have a small network using a Linksys router, and I have checked the
permission to share the "Shared Documents" folder over the network (the
folder icon shows the "server hand").

As a user with admin rights (XPpro SP1), there are at least 4 ways I can
navigate to this folder in the folder pane of Windows Explorer. When
everything is collapsed in the folder pane, the top item is "Desktop"
below which are "My Documents", "My Computer", "My Network Places", and
"Recycle Bin".
1. I could open the tree under "My Computer" and navigate through
"Documents and Settings" to "All Users" to "Documents".
2. I could open the tree under "My Computer" and just click on the
shortcut to "Shared Documents"
3. I could open the tree under "My Network Places" and navigate through
"Entire Network" to "Microsoft Windows Network" to "Workgroup" to
<mycomputername> to "Documents"
4. I could open the tree under "My Network Places" and just click on
the shortcut to "SharedDocs on <mycomputername>.

If I get to the folder using methods 1, 2, or 3, everything works fine.
If I use method 4, I can open a file in the "Shared Documents" folder,
but if I attempt to open a folder that's within "Shared Documents",
Windows Explorer simply closes, the Task Bar disappears for a short time
and then reappears. An error event is noted in the Event Viewer log.

Any suggestions to fix this behavior would be gratefully appreciated.

Would someone who has installed the Sept 10, 2003, RPC patch (MS03-039 fix
at KB 824146) please let me know if you experience the behavior described in
no. 4 below? KB 824136 describes a problem very similar to what I've
experienced (but not the same!) as a result of applying the July 16 version
of that patch (MS03-026 fix at KB 823980).

[I'm not at the PC with the problem right now; later tonight I'll try
uninstalling 824146 and see what happens.]
