XP File Sharing Help

I'm trying to create file shares on a couple of XP PCs so that I can
use Microsoft Synctoy.

This should be easy, but I must be missing something.

Both are XP SP2 Home PCs.

I already have documents and settings/all users/my documents shared on
the network with a network name Shared Documents.

That works fine, no problem.

But, now with wanting to use synctoy, I want to share some individual
user my documents files.

So, I went into documents and settings/user1/my documents and set it
to share this folder on the network and I allowed network users to
change my files.

That folder now shows up in the My Network Places on the other PC
(right next to that shared Shared Documents folder that works fine).

But, when I try to access the user1 share, I got the error saying \
\laptop\user1's documents is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource.

When set up like this, do I have to be logged in on the local PC as
the user who's files I want to access on the remote PC? I tried that
and it still didn't work.

Any ideas?

You access shared resources on another computer through an account on that
other computer. This account on the other computer must have the right to
access the remote shared resource.

I don't need to perform these actions very often hence I usually need to
consult the built in help facility of the net commands. Therefore, I do not
remember the exact wording of the command.

I think you'll have better luck if you log on with the account whose My
Documents folder you're trying to share.

On the computer where you're trying to share folders, log off your account
and log on as the other user. Open My Computer and right click on the My
Documents folder displayed. Set up sharing for this folder. Go to the other
computer and see if you have access. Keep in mind that if it doesn't work on
your first attempt, it doesn't hurt to restart both computers.

On a side note, you can pass on any advice that suggests creating matching
user accounts on both computers. Since your computers are running XP Home
Edition, that solution will have not work.

That was it! I had created the share in the admin account that I use
rather than the account's my document folder that I wanted shared.

I unshared the folders, rebooted, logged into the correct user account
re-shared and all is good.

Hi David,

When you are using File Sharing, you need to change the settings on each
Computer, to not allow the Hard Drive to spin down and sleep. If the Hard
Drives goes into Hiberation, the File Shares will not be available.

I would move the Laptop next to you at the Desktop and work on the two,
next to each other.

And the Network Name is wrong. It isn't the Network Name you use, but
the name of the computer. Make sure both Computers belong to the same
Workgroup.

There is a program that makes File Sharing easier, but the program for
what you want, is not free. It is called Network Magic.
