Excel Starting problem

G

Guest

I have windows XP home edition installed since last 2 years. Everything was
fine untill now. Last week when I clicked "Excel" Icon in my start up menu,
The system started installing "XP Small Busines" software. (I have never
installed it before) It is asking to insert system disk to install small
business. And at that stage if I click "Cancel", it stops but never opens
Excell spreadsheet. I tried to open it from the icon c:\program
files\Microsoft Office\office10\Excel.exe... It opened the spreadsheet but
also started an ataempt to install Small Busines software.

I remember last week we downloaded Mozila browser. I am not sure that could
have prompted such change.

In nut shell how can I get my excel normal functioning back.

please help

Is this a standalone computer or is it networked?

Have you looked for Errors / Warnings in the Application and System
sections of Event Viewer?

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Links giving some information about specific Error Reports are:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

These links, however, do not contain information about each and every
Error Report.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A
workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off
the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Is your PC an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), like
a Dell or Gateway ? If so, did you receive a packet with a copy
of Small business Office XP (Should have been a two disk set) ?

There are a number of things that can trigger a Office setup.
Did you notice a message that relates to "You are attempting to
use a feature that is not installed, would you like to install it now?"

This is a common issue that comes up quite a bit. To use Office
Update you have to have your original disks or a disk/network
install path. Microsoft uses this as a countermeasure to stop
"Casual Copying", where Office is installed but no source media
or hard drive source is available.

I suspect that this comes about when certain types & versions
of other .msi installer packages are run.

Can you open any other Office components ?, If so then you
could do a Help/Detect & Repair operation, but that would also
require access to the source media.

Your point is new to me but worth making. It leads me to suggest
checking the Office Update website for updates.

Hi,

Thanks both of you.

Mine is a stand alone computer. No network.

I tried to run Excel.exe from Start / Run and as I expected it didnot open
spreadsheet and started attempting to install small business.

Gary, The system is not giving any error message. Also unfortunately I could
not find "Adminisrative tools" in my start up menu

Just a feed back to your replies...

Hi McCarty,

Mine is a Dell syatem and I have all softwares supplied by dell. I believe I
have small business too. I don't mind installing it too. if excel starts
behaving.

I tried to open all office components - Word, Outlook, Ooulook Express,
Media player & Publisher. They all are fine. Except in publisher the system
had a problem in opening it and opened it in safe mode. I don'y use publisher
"ever". I dont remeber having opened it in last one year. I am not sure if
the two are related problems

If you have adequate disk space, save yourself some grief. Create
a folder path C:\Installs\OfficeXP\Disk1 -and-
C:\Installs\OfficeXP\Disk2
Copy the contents of each disk into it's respective folders. Then
open Setup.Exe from Disk1. When the controller opens, choose
add/Remove components. Disable Publisher (Left Click) and
take "Not Available", Next ...
Once you remove Publisher, it will redefine the installer paths, etc
in the Registry. Afterward when you click Excel it should know
where to get the installer components to repair.
After that go to Office Update and get all applicable patches for
Office XP (Should be up to Service Pack 3 level).

Another route to Event Viewer -Start, Control Panel, Administrative
Tools. McCarty seems to be leading you to a solution.
