Excel crashes, after just 2 mouse clicks

Since yesterday, excel (2003) started crashing sort of randomly. I
wanted to change the size of the columns and it just froze. I thought
my system just wasn't stable, so I tried a reboot, but it didn't work.
Since then every time I start excel (existing as well as blank files)
I can do 1 mouse click (selecting a cell), but when I select another,
excel just crashes.

I tried to repair it, using the installation CD, but the install
program crashed too. Then I tried to deinstall excel, but that crashed
too, then I tried reinstalling without deinstalling... I think you can
guess what happened.

After that I tried a system restore... no success.

Then I started googling the problem. But couldn't find a lot about it,
only something about renaming .xlb files to .old. So, I tried that...
and it worked! Or so it seemed. I can do more than just 2 mouseclicks
now, but when I try to select a number of cells at once, of when I
click around too fast in excel, it crashes again.

So... I really do not know what to try next...

Does anyone have any idea? You would help me a lot!

Thanks in advance

Check your event viewer to see what is happening during those crashes. In you
Control Panel open Administrative Tools then open Event Viewer and view
application events.
