error on start up

hi, Everytime i try to start my computer up after i get
pass the windows xp screen i get a black screen that says
windows could not start because "indows\system32
\config\system" is missing or corrupted and then tells me
to do the recovery but when i get to the recovery i have
no idea what to type in to try and fix the problem. any
help would be greatly appreciated
