basically i start up my laptop, and it doesn't get to open windows, because
it says (on a black screen) that the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

i tried to run the recovery console, and tried to follow the first prompt
(according to the instructions on article 307545) like so:

md tmp

it says that the file tmp already exists..i'm not sure about all this coding
and stuff, so SOMEBODY PLS HELP! my laptop was working just yesterday!!

ok, i'll try and explain my problem.
after i select the (r) for the recovery console, it asks me
"which windows installation would you like to log onto?"

i select the number, and then the prompt comes up, so i followed article
307545 and typed
"md tmp"
and it says - 'A directory or file which the name tmp already exists'

what do i do? i even tried typing the next line of stuff, which is
"copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak"
and then it says - 'the system cannot find the file specified'

my laptop (compaq) was only working just before, and i've already had the
hard drive replaced about 1.5 years ago. i've got heaps of data i dont want
to lose by re-installing.

someone hlp pls pls PLS, i'm not a very technical person ;(

You won't have to reinstall...maybe
.....Article 309531 is for XP exclusively a so I'll assume you are using XP
Professional on a lap top?

"c:\windows\tmp\system.bak"
If your doing everything in that article correctly then your computers'
system file is corrupt and would limit your options. If you are not very
technical person a parallell install might be your best shot.

A parallel Install will add another windows Directory next to the old one
(you build an new OS integrating it with the old one)
However you do have some other options , you can wait for another response
but should root around the web a little more and troll other forums for
another solution. But definately see this ;

I think a repair install would be less messy: boot from your install
CD. DO NOT CHOOSE TO REPAIR the first time you get that option. Choose
to install XP. Go through the next screens until you once again get the
option to either repair or install. If you choose repair this time, all
system files will be rewritten, but all your personal files will be
preserved and most of your apps will still work (Office, printers,
routers, browsers, games....)

There is a anme for that and some people refer to it as a "clean" install. I
know its not right but if you know it would save me some arguements.
