windows/system32/config/system missing or corrupt

Marc

i've just brought a new pc with xp pro, tried botting for
the first time and it gives me this error message:

"indows could noy dtart because the following file is
missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system
You cqan attempt to repair this file by starting windows
setup using the original setup cd-rom. Select "r" at the
first screen to start repair."

I have tried pressing "r" at the welcome screen with the
original disk inserted but it doesn't make any difference,
i still come to the same error message, i don't get any
option to boot from the disk.

Is there anything else i can try, any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Terry,

If you don't get an option to boot from the CD you might
try changing your options in the BIOS to allow that.
Once you do, the "Repair" option does not come until the
setup process has taken you you through a number of
screens.

Terry,

If you are an inexperienced computer user obviosly
you do not know how to alter the BIOS. To do this simply
boot the machine and when it says press DEL to enter
setup press "Delete" after that you have to go to The
second listing on the left hand side which I believe is
something like "Configure BIOS" after you go into this
section look for "BOOT SEQUENCE" after you have found
this alter it to read as CD-ROM first and then your other
drives. Then exit this menue and select "Save and Exit"
push enter and your computer will re-boot and it will ask
you to push a key ro boot from the Cd drive push any
button and let windows load the necessary files. When
this is done you will be brought to the the screen that
askes you to push R. And thats how its done. Hope This
was a help :)

If you are still unable to use Windows, it would probably
be a bad hard drive or memory. I would suspect memory
more.
