Follow the directions on this website to the letter and you'll have
windows
running again. Obviously you will need to access the website from another
computer or laptop. Either print out the steps or have another
computer/laptop nearby connected to the web.
Repairing Windows XP in Eight Commands

[there is a typo on step 4 page 2]
C:ATRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
THIS should read
C:ATTRIB -R C:\\boot.ini
Continue to page 2 to proceed with the repair functions. Each step has a
graphic.
It requires that you have the media [XP Home or Pro Disk - will not work
with a recovery disk].
Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order
in
the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system
documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
After Windows has finished copying all the files it needs for the process
you will be presented with a "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the
options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on
your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. This
is
the option you need. Follow the procedure as outlined in the article
above.
I don't know how knowledgeable you are about computers. I have used this
procedure successfully on PC's that only came with a recovery disk. If you
do not have a disk find a friend that has a copy of whatever version of
windows you are running. Your COA (Certificate of Authenticity) on the
side
of the case or where ever it was placed should state the version of
Windows
i.e. Home or Professional.
