It is an OEM machine then. The maker of the pc should be able to furnish
you with a boot disk. MS does not furnish support for OEM PCs.
There should be a restore or repair partition on the disk. The fine manual
tells you if you have such a partition and how to use it.
If you don't have a manual, then you must disclose the make and model of the
pc. Someone may know how to access the partition.

Follow the directions on this website to the letter and you'll have windows
running again. Obviously you will need to access the website from another
computer or laptop. Either print out the steps or have another
computer/laptop nearby connected to the web.

Continue to page 2 to proceed with the repair functions. Each step has a

It requires that you have the media [XP Home or Pro Disk - will not work
with a recovery disk].

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in
the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system
documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

After Windows has finished copying all the files it needs for the process
you will be presented with a "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the
options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on
your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. This is
the option you need. Follow the procedure as outlined in the article above.

I don't know how knowledgeable you are about computers. I have used this
procedure successfully on PC's that only came with a recovery disk. If you
do not have a disk find a friend that has a copy of whatever version of
windows you are running. Your COA (Certificate of Authenticity) on the side
of the case or where ever it was placed should state the version of Windows
i.e. Home or Professional.

you can attemt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the

So you need these
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
You have a recovery Console in it.
It is possible to make a CD ==>
http://fspsa.free.fr/cdr.zip
Notice that you also have a Recovery Console with UBCD4WIN
http://www.ubcd4win.com
http://fspsa.free.fr/images/ubcd4win-boot.gif
Is there a way i can get a xp boot disk from some were? or help?

ERD Commander is easy to use
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/perform-system-restore-rollback-on-non-bootable-xp-computer/

First you should try a CHKDSK C: /R
from the Command Prompt.

Yes. You can borrow any bootable XP CD to fix this, home or Pro, retail or
OEM. . You boot to the recovery console, which is the same for all
versions.

The directions here tell you what to do next:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Note that if you just cannot get a disk, you can adapt the directions to
other means of accessing the hard disk, such as a Linux boot CD or attaching
the drive to another system - then you can do all the things in one pass
without the extra reboots.

Hi gareth106,

You have been given some good answers already that are not complicated.

Get a copy of XP from a friend or buddy.

Without access to another computer you could use the procedure posted by
Kelly. There are 6 commands to type. How hard can that be?

The hardest bit for you will possibly be accessing the Recovery Console
using the XP disk.

[Modified from original post]

Start the computer, put the XP CD in the DVD/CD tray. Watch on the screen
for the prompt to boot from CD, it will ask you to press any key to begin
this process - you have about 6 secs to do this. If you miss this step you
have to start again. You may need to change the boot order in the system
BIOS so the system looks for the CD and boots from it before it attempts to
boot using the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to
access the BIOS and change the boot order if necessary.

If it is successful booting from the CD windows will copy a few files for
this process. After Windows has finished copying all the files it needs for
the process you will be presented with a blue "Welcome To Setup" screen, you
will see the 2 options below

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

The option 'To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console,
press R' is the one you need. Go ahead and press R on the keyboard. Follow
the procedure as outlined below that Kelly posted.

Recovery Console will open once it has located your copy of windows on the
hard drive, it will ask you which windows installation would you like to log
onto type 1 and press enter.

You will then be asked to enter your administrator password. Type that
password in and press enter or if you don't have an administrators password
just press enter.

You will now be presented with a c: prompt that looks this: c:\>

Now type the commands below in order and press enter after typing each
command

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit

Computer will now reboot. While the computer is rebooting you can take the
XP CD out of the DVD/CD tray or just ignore the prompts on the screen this
time when it asks if you want to boot from the CD.

I'm in exactly the same position with a corrupted registry. I've got XP on
a disc and can get as far as the Setup/Repair/Exit screen - but I can't
access the repiar console because I'm being asked for a password that I
don't have! Any suggestions?

Thanks in hopeful anticipation!

The password being requested is the one assigned by you to the built-in
Administrator account, not the one for your regular user account. If you
didn't assign a password, the default is a blank. Or you can use NTpasswd
to change the built-in Administrator's password to a blank.

Assume that there is no password and hit Enter.

The password being requested is that of the built-in
_Administrator_ account, not the password for any other administrative
user accounts that you may have created. Unless you deliberately set
the Administrator's password via the Management Console (_not_ the
Control Panel), it's probably still blank. WinXP Pro asks the installer
to set the Administrator's password during installation, but WinXP Home
doesn't.

Failing that, Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the
Internet, freely available to anyone who can use Google.
