Can't Start XP - Corrupted System

My laptop sometimes shuts off unexpectedly...
When I try and reboot my Windows XP Home Edition, I get this message:
"Cannot boot because of Missing or Corrupted file
C:\windows\system32\config\system"
I don't know how to restore it...I go into recovery console mode, but I
don't know what CAB file that "System" is in, if any.
Any ideas how to fix it or reinstall it?
thanks,

thanks, this looks good..except i don't think I can get into XP in the first
place.
The message about corrupted "System" starts as soon as I boot up, and my
only options is to load the original XP CD and do a "repair" or do a full
reinstall.
When I do a "repair," it starts a special Repair console mode, which only
allows a few select DOS commands of its own, and doesn't let me run other
programs (or I think that is the case).
thanks,

It looks like I kind of got it going..

I went into the "Recovery Console", renamed the corrupt SYSTEM file to
SYSTEM2, then I saw a file called SYSTEM.SAV and renamed it SYSTEM. It
apparently is booting now and I can try your fix.

In Rosman Computing <[email protected]> had this to
say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

If it doesn't work:
