Missing or Corrupt \...\config\system

Have a laptop with XP Pro SP2. When the user boots he gets-

Missing or Corrupt windows\system32\config\system

I have found an article ID 307545 on this but warned there may be a problem
if the this is an OEM version of XP. The article steps may be overkill for
what I need. The system file does exist in the config folder, so it must be
corrupt. I could rename the orginal or copy to a tmp folder.

Can I not just copy of the system file from the \Repair folder to the
\config folder using Recovery Console?
