I frequently receive a Windows File Protection error msg -
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original
versions of these files. Insert Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 1 CD now." Naturally, I don't have this CD.

This started some time ago after I ran a Windows Update.

Any help on how to correct this would REALLY be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

If you copy your i386 folder to a hard drive and assume C.

Check these registry settings >>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
CDInstall 0
SourcePath C:\
ServicePackSourcePath C:\

Many thanks Wesley, the keys you specified had values of
"1", "D:\", "D:\", respectively. Made changes, so can
only wait to see if error message repeats.

ABM,

Try this:
Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow | OK
See what happens.
