ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM

I wanted to simply re-install my XP Pro Sp2 OS over my existing installation
to correct a performance issue I began experiencing yesterday. [My OS
performance would go to a stand-still after just a few operations - opening a
program or whatever.]

I booted with my installation disk, but did not get an option to install
over an existing installation, so I backed-out using F3, F3.

I booted again and chose the Recovery Console option. [I haven't done this
for awhile, so I wanted to follow that path to see if the re-install option I
wanted was down this path. I thought maybe I forgot where this option was
located.] Of course it wasn't here, so I typed EXIT.

I attempted to boot my pc again so I could launch the installation from
within Windows. I immediately got the message "Error Loading Operating
System."

I have an encryption system installed, and I realized that was why the
installation routine didn't see my existing installation, so now I've
decrypted the full hard drive (successfully) using my recovery disk for the
encryption system.

There must be a bug somewhere for my installation to have been damaged. I
was very careful and meticulous - taking NO steps to actually DO anything -
but the damage occurred anyway.

I have a C: and D: partition. All my data is on the D: partition. I
realize I have two options. Try FIXMBR and hope I don't have my partitions
trashed or install a fresh copy of XP on my C: partition, then re-install all
my software.

I think my second option is the right one to follow. Does anyone have any
better ideas?

Thank you so much,

CM

Try CHKDSK from the RC prompt. If you can't 'save the old registry' this way,
I'm afraid no repair is going to be possible.

Thanks Mark. I'll check.

I configured my partitions this way specifically for such occurrances, so
re-installing on the first partition isn't that big of a deal - just more
work and time.

One concern I have, though, is that the installation routine doesn't identify
the two partitions as NTFS partitions. Instead, it says UNKNOWN.

This sure is an extreme problem considering how careful and thoughtful I was
when I did the steps I described in my original post.

By the way, there's a program called MBRFIX online that indicates it can
correct MBR and partition issues. By any chance, have you heard of this?

The CHKDSK routine says "The volume appears to contain one or more
unrecoverable problems." No too great !

Yes, but the installation routine does not identify an EXISTING installation
to repair, so I can't proceed with a repair intallation.

Yes, not good news. CHKDSK is really a powertful little app. I would tend to
take it's word for it. Not heard of MBRFIX.
