DVD Drive Recognized as Cd Drive

P

Patience

I am really stumped here. One day I could burn and watch DVDs no problem,
now, it is only recognized as a CD drive. I operate Windows XP Pro. I have
a Lite-on DVD-RW sohw 1673S dvd/cd drive and with out apparent cause it has
decided to stop working. Whenever I try to copy files to a blank dvd a
window pops up that says "Windows encountered a problem trying to copy this
folder. What do you want windows to do?" It then lists what the folder
contains and offeres me to skip, retry, and cancel. It doesn't matter if the
files are pictrures, music, word documents, it won't work. I really just
need to burn my files so I can reformat the computer. It runs realitvely
well (besides that problem) but I recived a new hard drive and wanted to
start fresh.

Thank you so much for your time.

Hello Patience,

Check that the drive is enabled for CD writing.

In My Computer, right-click on the drive and select 'Properties'.
Click the 'Recording' tab, and check that the box 'Enable CD writing
on this drive' is checked.
If the Recording tab is missing, see below.

Next:
Go to Start => Run and type in "services.msc" {without the quotes}
Maximize the window and scroll down to:
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
If it is set at Disabled, double-click and set it to Manual and Start
it.
In some cases, you may have to set it to Automatic.

If that doesn't fix the problem:
Open the Device Manager by going to Start => Run and typing in
"devmgmt.msc" {without the quotes}.
Right-click on the CD drive in DVD/CD ROM Drives and click on
'Uninstall'.
Restart the computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem:
Copy the text below between the dotted lines, but not the dotted lines
themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in

a suitable location as drives.reg - making sure that the default .txt
extension doesn't appear in the file name (Save as type = All

Files).
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
Restart.

I had a similar problem. Your advice about starting IMAPI CD-Burning COM
Service and reinstalling the device fixed it. Thanks!

Hi I have a similar problem. I am running Windows XP Home edition with
LiteOn LDW-851S DVD-+RW drive. A while back I uninstalled the MYDVD and
PowerDVDD software that came with the drive. Well that caused the drive to
disappear completely. I reinstalled the software and used the regedit to
reset the upper/lower filters. What I didn't realize until lately is that
the Recording tab is missing in the properties for the drive and the Sendto
option was missing. My question is Can I use the solution mentioned above
concerning the DWORD because XP Home doesn't have Polocies? What about the
other solution linked to the Microsoft article. Which number would I use
since my drive is a DVD-R/RW drive? Any help would be appreciated. Thank
you for your time.

Girltech,

I have the same issue as you, did you find a way around your issue?
Mine is a DVD-RW and if i change the value to '2' it is detected as a
CD-RW not DVD-RW.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hilal,

I ended up uninstalling the drive from Device manager and then rebooting my
machine and the drive was found and the recording tab was back. I was having
an issue with Sonic DLA being installed and once I was able to get rid of it
everything came back fine. I hope this helps. Good luck.
