I had a similar problem. Your advice about starting IMAPI CD-Burning COM
Service and reinstalling the device fixed it. Thanks!
I am really stumped here. One day I could burn and watch DVDs no problem,
now, it is only recognized as a CD drive. I operate Windows XP Pro. I have
a Lite-on DVD-RW sohw 1673S dvd/cd drive and with out apparent cause it
has
decided to stop working. Whenever I try to copy files to a blank dvd a
window pops up that says "Windows encountered a problem trying to copy
this
folder. What do you want windows to do?" It then lists what the folder
contains and offeres me to skip, retry, and cancel. It doesn't matter if
the
files are pictrures, music, word documents, it won't work. I really just
need to burn my files so I can reformat the computer. It runs realitvely
well (besides that problem) but I recived a new hard drive and wanted to
start fresh.
Thank you so much for your time.
Hello Patience,
Check that the drive is enabled for CD writing.
In My Computer, right-click on the drive and select 'Properties'.
Click the 'Recording' tab, and check that the box 'Enable CD writing
on this drive' is checked.
If the Recording tab is missing, see below.
Next:
Go to Start => Run and type in "services.msc" {without the quotes}
Maximize the window and scroll down to:
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
If it is set at Disabled, double-click and set it to Manual and Start
it.
In some cases, you may have to set it to Automatic.
If that doesn't fix the problem:
Open the Device Manager by going to Start => Run and typing in
"devmgmt.msc" {without the quotes}.
Right-click on the CD drive in DVD/CD ROM Drives and click on
'Uninstall'.
Restart the computer.
If that doesn't fix the problem:
Copy the text below between the dotted lines, but not the dotted lines
themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in
a suitable location as drives.reg - making sure that the default .txt
extension doesn't appear in the file name (Save as type = All
Files).
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
Restart.

IF THE RECORDING TAB IS MISSING IN THE DRIVE'S PROPERTIES
Go to Start => Run and type in regedit {without the quotes} and press
the Enter key.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
\Explorer
In the right-hand pane, look for the DWORD value 'NoCDBurning'.
Double-click this entry and set the Value data to 0 {that's a zero}.
If the DWORD entry doesn't exist, right-click in empty area and select
New => DWORD Value and name it "NoCDBurning" {without
the quotes}.
Double-click on the new entry and set its value to 0.
Log off and Logon again (or restart the computer for the change to
take effect.
