DVD drive recognized only as CD drive in XP

Miles Emerson

Due to Vista issues, I'm back using XP as my OS. All's well except that it
will not recognized my DVD drive/burner as such, identifying it only as a CD
drive. It reads blank DVD media as full and not useable--yet it does display
the correct icon under "My Computer" as DVD media in a CD drive.

I am able to view DVDs without issue--XP will just not allow me to burn onto
blank DVD media--and this is crucial since I make many home movies of my kids
for family. I assume the problem is partially related (if not completely) to
the fact that the OS sees only a CD drive.

My hope is that this is a configuration glitch. I have an LG DVD burner
(HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H55L as identified under my computer). My system is an
intel based dual core 2.4Ghz with 2GB of ram.

Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

XP does not burn DVDs natively, only CDs. You must install a third party
application such as Nero. Usually, there is a CD with the burner that
contains such app.

You can also try CDBurnerXP which is a free app that works well.

XP does not have native support for DVD burning, you need to install 3rd
party mastering software such as Nero, Roxio, or one of the free
applications.
