cd drive not recognized

Hi all.

I have a laptop with windows xp on it that is not recognizing the cd
drive in windows. The bios does recognize the cd drive and I can boot
off of a boot disc. The device manager shows no cd/dvd rom drives.
I've tried the fix with the upper and lower filters in the registry, but
that did not fix the problem. I also uninstalled all cd/dvd burning
software. I do not have itunes installed. Does anyone have any other
suggestions as to how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Go back to Device Manager and under View select Show hidden Devices.
Double check the registry to make sure that the fix
did work.

After tinkering with the filters and such, you did reboot...

Any upgrades, SPs, etc. since the last time you used it?

Any errors in Event Viewer or Device Manager (?s, !s, or Xs) anywhere
- especially in the IDE section (please click the + to expand).

While you are unhiding, try a Scan for hardware changes under
Actions. Can't hurt.

No

Good thought, I should have thought of this before. But there are no
errors or warnings in the event logs.

Yes, I tried scanning for hardware changes and it found nothing. Any
other suggestions?

In my case I've noted that this seems to be a continuing problem with
XP that happens intermittently. I believe Doug Knox has a fix for
disappearing CD/DVD drives on his site, which, by the way, I have used
many times to repair this problem.
His site is located at:
http://www.dougknox.com/

I tried the vbs script and rebooted and still no joy. I finally managed
to bring it back for now, by shutting down the laptop, removing the cd
drive, then booting with no cd drive and putting it back in after
windows booted. It recognized the new hardware and installed it. But I
know it will probably have this problem again. Thanks for everyone's help!!

No good ones. If it was me I would yank it out, boot Windows, let it
maybe see it is missing and reverse the process and see it again.
