CD and DVD do not show up properly after upgrade from win 2000 to XP Pro

Hello All,
I have a pc that had win 2000 pro on it I upgraded to win xp pro all seemed
fine, except my cd and dvd (S & T ) were gone only cd showing is R. R does
not respond to eject or anything. I tried the upper / lower filters registry
fix with no luck. I put a blank c drive in place of my boot drive loaded win
xp both cd and dvd work, I exported the reg entries for the upper / lower
filters fix to see if the entries were identical and they were, so i do not
understand why the cd and dvd are not seen with my real boot drive.
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks

Did you update the BIOS on the PC yet (ever?)? How about the CD & DVD
firmwares, up to date?

.

Go into Disk Management. Can you see the CD and DVD drives there? If so, do
they have drive letters? If not, assign them a letter and see if they appear
in My Computer.

drive letter was assigned but still no luck. whats strange is that i have
the physical drive cable disconnected from the motherboard and it still
shows up in windows explorer and disk management.

O.K
I made great headway, i unplugged the cd and dvd drives then re plugged and
they came back and work fine as e an f drives. My last problem is an R drive
that does not exist but constantly displays even when I delete the drive in
hardware manager. When I reeboot the drive lettert shows back up ant ideas
how to get rid of it permanently?
