does not recognize cd

when I put a new cd (or any cd) into the cdrom drive, it does not recognize
the cd. (It is only a cdrom not a dvdrom and I am using windows xp.) The cd
drive icon still appears in my computer, but when i click on this, it comes
up with files that were created for burning to a blank cd a long time ago.
How can i get the computer to recognize a cd. I cannot insert the original
windows cds that came with the computer to reload any drivers/software
because the computer doesn't recognize the cd...

"it comes up with files that were created for burning to a blank cd a

Sounds like an "image" CD-ROM. Do you have Nero or similar as Nero
produces an Image cd/dvd.

PS. Go to My Computer and check how many cd/dvd-roms showing. If you
have one more than shows physically (on front of your PC Box) you have
an Image. :)

Sounds like the same problem some time ago with Pioneer DVD drives. 112D's I
think?
Return for refund or bin it.
Throw a new one in & see if it works?

Click on the drive icon. When it opens, look in the pane to the left. Delete
the temporary files. Those files that you created for burning to CD long ago
should now be gone.

Yes, Nero is the cd burner software. I haven't always had this problem
though. CDs used to work ok in the drive. So is it something I have done to
stop the drive recognizing cd?

The cd drive is no good then? I think the computer is about 5 or 6 years old
so I think a refund is out of the question...

See Peter Foldes's post to you July 3.
