DVD and CD-R drives

Both drives have ceased to work, but are shown in the device manager with
exclamation markes in yellow circles. I therefore think they have somehow
been disabled. How do I get them back please?
Thanks in advance for any help

Disabled would be represented by a Red X, but anyway if you
double-click one of them what does the details box "Device Status"
box display.

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your DVD/CD-ROM
drives, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your CD/DVD Drives and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the drives.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Hi Carey,

Did that and they came back exactly as before with the circle on them. A
prompt comes up saying new hardware installed, but they are not shown and
nothing will play.

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

CD-ROM Drive or DVD-ROM Drive Missing After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

Both icons are back on the toolbar, but,
D will not work: D:\ is not accessable. Incorrect function
E brings up the control panel, but will not play, gives no option to do so.

Halfway there?

Thanks for your help so far, more would be appreciated.

If one drive on a channel goes south, it may not let the other one work.
Try one cdrom drive at a time and see what happens.
