Downloading IRS files with Windows XP

I downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 and an IRS 1040a
file but Windows XP can't open it. A prompt keeps saying
that Adobe is not a "valid Win32 application." How do I
get Windows XP to recognize Adobe and the IRS file?
