Can't open Adobe files since updraging to XP

KevinH

I recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home
Edition and now cannot open Adobe Acrobat files like
forms the IRS has online for downloading. It is very
frustrating. With Windows 98 it was no problem. Now
when I try the screen is just blank with no explanation.
Please help! Thanks.

There is nothing included in Windows (98 or XP) that handles PDF files.

Go to www.adobe.com and download a new copy of Adobe Reader. Then
install it. You will have noticed the IRS web pages has links to this
Adobe site for this purpose.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Yes, I tried that. Still nothing- just blank page. It is
not just Adobe, but some other things like applying online
for college anymore either- I used to get a msg when this
first started but havent seen that recently. Something
like plug in not initializing properly...that did not
happen with Windows 98- I thought that XP would be able to
do all the things that 98 did, but I guess not for some
reason. Does that make sense to you and do you have any
advise for me? Thanks.

XP can do all 98 can do, plus more. First advice: don't blame 98 vs.
XP. Waste of time/energy.

When you mention applying on line for college .. well, perhaps these are
Java applications and you need Java or something?

I suspect security settings in Internet Explorer.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

I'd add one thing, Rob and Kevin: un-install the old version of Adobe
Reader before installing the new one.

Good catch. Yes indeed. You remind me how that helped me with the
upgrade from 5.0 to 6.0.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
