Disk defragmentation

Hello, All!

Does XP do any disk defragmenting automatically (or move files selectively
to speed up XP) or should I set scheduled tasks to defrag an xp system as
I've done on my w2k system?

It doesn't defrag automatically. You will need to set up a schedule as you
have done in your Win2k system.

Defrag cannot be scheduled directly, but there is a small script that
can be run as a scheduled task that will defrag all your drives. See:

WinXP doesn't defrag the hard drive automatically by default, but you
can use the Task Scheduler to create a scheduled task to defrag the
drives as often as you wish. Start > All Programs > System Tools > Task
Scheduler. The program you'll want to select (by browsing) is
C:\Winnt\System32\Defrag.exe.

Oops! A couple of mistakes to correct:

1) The correct path for the task scheduler is "Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks."

2) The correct path to the defrag program should read
"C:\*Windows*\System32\Defrag.exe"

I forget that my Start Menu and file structure configurations aren't
the default WinXP ones.

There was an extra dash in utility that does not belong there. Try this
one:

Also, WinXP has a function called Prefetch. While it does not perform a
light defrag, it will check the contents of the ..\windows\prefetch\ folder
about every 3 days and move often used files so that they are more easily
accessible.
