Upgraded install of XP over W2k - no internet

Hello, All!

I installed XP as an upgrade rather than clean install over my w2k system
(installed it over 1 of 2 w2k OS partition installations so I'm operable in
my dual boot by booting up on w2k).

I have a problem with the XP system. I can not access the internet. I am on
a cable modem which worked fine with w2k. But I've have been totally unable
to gain access with XP.

Thanks and help appreciated.

Thanks.

Colonel Blip.

I'll check it out. I'm also running down an ethernet controller problem that
is likely related.

Thanks.

What kind of NIC (network/ethernet card) are you using? I have seen some
that change the MAC address everytime you install/upgrade your drivers. The
one specifically I have dealt with is an onboard NIC on an ASUS motherboard.
If this is the case you may have different MAC addresses per OS and your ISP
may be wanting one of them.

Have you checked in Device Manager to be sure no devices are shown with
a yellowed exclamation mark (i.e., not working), like for the network
card? You could download the latest Windows XP driver for the NIC from
the maker's web site. If it is an onboard NIC, download and install the
latest Windows XP chipset driver package for that chipset.

Problem solved. I had a on-board NIC driver that needed to be updated with
an XP driver. Interestingly it was an ASUS m/b. Not a MAC problem, just an
out of date driver.

Thanks.

Problem solved. I had a on-board NIC driver that needed to be updated with
an XP driver. Didn't show in the compat. testing but did when I took a look
at the device manager.

Of course, I'll no doubt have a bunch of other problems as I continue the
transition.

Thanks.
