Differential Diagnosis?

Can someone please help me with this.

I have Windows 98SE, IE6. Ever since I got connected to broadband
(SpeedTouch modem) my browser works only sometimes. No web pages
download.Same problem if I switch to Firefox after it has stopped working.
When it stops working I have to turn off the PC and then reboot before it
will work again.

My Outlook Express continues to work, and so does my Messenger.

What sort of PC problems might cause this? There must be areas of the
programming specific to the IE function of receiving webpage information,
surely? It looks like a contention issue, but can that affect just the
browser?

Many thanks,

Brian

Does it ever happen if you only use Firefox?

Do you use any antivirus, popup blockers or firewalls?

Amy add on toolbars?

Have you used anything to check for spyware.

My guess is Norton Internet Security - if so turn it off and see if that
helps. (Pure guess by the way)

Some suggestions below to help with spyware removal

SpyBot Search and Destroy

Microsoft Antispyware

Important - LSP-Fix
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Be aware that using either of these to actually remove spyware can result in
some programs refusing to work, in other words "Free" programs that you
downloaded on condition you accepted ads and so called "Research" may get
broken and you might want to uninstall them first. Some spyware actually
breaks Windows trying to force it's way in and you should arm yourself with
LSP-Fix before starting in case you lose internet connectivity.

Thanks -

I'll try those suggestions. I don't have any firewall or AV running when
this happens. I haven't tried just using Firefox, but thought I might.

Spyware - I use Adaware. I'll supplement that with Spybot.

By the way, *can* a contention issue affect just the browser?

*Get* an AV application and a firewall ASAP! See...

I have them, but I was seeing what happened about this problem once they
were turned off.
