failures accessing commonly used webpages (eg. yahoo.com)

I have two PC's side by side. An older slower system (1.0 ghz soltek)
runs on windows 98se and is connected via a linksys hardwired router
through an AT&T 4100 speedstor DSL modem. This win98se system never
has any problem accessing webpages via IE6 or Mozilla'a firefox.
Along with this PC, I have a windows 2000 PC (freshly installed) on a
2.4 ghz P4 machine and it is connected to the internet via the same
linksys router and AT&T 4100 speedstor modem. I can switch the
connectors on the router between the two PC's and it makes no
difference.

I am dumbfounded because my P4 Windows 2000 (SP4) machine frequently
fails to connect to common webpages, and, I have to "try again"
repeatedly before it will finally connect. This happens so often that
I cannot get into websurfing since the irritation at having to keep
"trying again" breaks the stride. I can also switch between IE6 and
Firefox when this happens and it makes NO DIFFERENCE. But, anytime
this happens on my windows 2000 PC, I can go to the very same webpage
on my old soltek windows 98se PC and it connects to the webpage
immediately.

Something is wrong with my windows 2000 installation (recently
installed a few days ago) that causes it to fail when trying to go to
common webpages whereas my windows 98se PC gets right through with no
problems. I just don't understand this and I am wondering what could
be the cause. I am tempted to remove windows 2000 and install windows
98se on my P4 PC to avoid this problem, but, I really need windows
2000 on this PC for other reasons.

If anyone can help me get to the bottom of this, I'd really appreciate
it. Mind you, everytime this happens, I can immediately go to my old
Windows 98se PC and get right through to the webpage in question
without any delays at all. I can switch connectors to the router and
it makes no difference. It must be something in the way windows 2000
sp4 processes webpage access that is different from windows 98se that
causes windows 2000 to hang up where windows 98se somehow gets right
through. Any ideas ?

Did you do a Repair Install of Win2K or did you format & do a clean install?
If the former, was IE6 installed prior to the Repair Install?

I did a complete format of C: and installed win2k (sp4) from scratch.
Everything is brand newly installed - that is why ths perplexes me so
- I am wondering if it has to do with AT&T's DSL interface or just the
way win2k goes about timing during webseeks ( it seems that if I keep
on clicking "try again" it will finally show the page ) - maybe win2k
gives up too soon where win98se keeps on retrying and gets the page
fairly quickly - I just don't know.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you quote all of the previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Not all of us are using

Why did you do the clean install?

A clean install of Win2K = "a new computer"

5 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online

Did you take care of EVERYTHING on the above webpage before otherwise
connecting the Win2K computer to internet (e.g., to browse, chat, check
email, download other stuff) OR the router and other computers on the
network?

Both my primary and backup harddrives failed last week so I had to
install w2k clean to a new h/d. I have never used a firewall nor any
virus software because I always tried to keep a backup ready to go in
case I got a virus. Virus infection is not something i expect with a
brand new install using common webpages, especially since my old
win98se system works perfectly (for over 2 years now) to the same
webpages. My problem has to do with the differences in the way win2k
processes webpage connections versus the way win98se does it - that is
where I am focusing my attention and that is what I am hoping someone
knows about. I have to deal with the fact that my old win98se system
accesses webpages with ease and my new win2k system gets "loading
failed" message frequently to the very same webpages at the very same
time, but, finally makes the connection after is hit "try again"
repeatedly.

Without a fully-funtional, fully-updated anti-virus application AND firewill
installed, a computer can be infected within milliseconds of being connected
to the internet!

Hi,

Compare the settings on the Advanced tab of Internet options. Particularly
your settings for HTTP 1 and SSL.

And also your settings on the Connection tab.

Regards.

I did the compare you suggested (advanced internet options) and there
were 4 or 5 differences which I changed (in win2k) to make them the
same as I found in my win98se, but, it didn't seem to change the way
it works - I still get hiccups under win2k until I switch over
temporarily to win98se and access the very same page (which works with
no problem), and, then that same page comes up fine under win2k - that
is so confusing to me!
