IE6 is calling Firefox

D

Interesting behaviour on a friends PC. When he types in an address in to
IE6 a Firefox window is opened up.

It would seem that both IE6 and Firefox think they are the default
browser.

I have "re-set Internet options" in IE6 which is supposed to make it the
default, buy no joy.

If I un-install Firefox, IE6 comes up with "application not found" when
you try and go to a website.

It you put the address in the "default webpage" and close/re-open IE6 it
finds and displays the page OK, so it is working. It just wants to call
Firefox to do any work!

So the question is how to get IE6 back to its original self?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
