IE6 does not check whether it is the default browser

Firefox is currently my default browser - I wish to return to IE6. I've
checked the box in Tools-Internet Options-Programs "Internet Explorer should
check whether it is the default browser", clicked "apply", re-booted,
started IE and it doesn't! I know there's a fix for this, but can't find it
at the moment.
