did win xp reformat drive when I installed?

I installed win xp over win ME hoping I would keep my
programs etc. Did I lose everything? Is there anything I
can do to recover photos, docs etc?

IF you allowed the installation program to partition and/or format the
drive, it is all gone.
 
Hi Fred,

If you chose a clean install, then all may be lost. If you chose an upgrade,
then your files and programs may simply be under a different profile. Open
Windows Explorer to C:\Documents and settings and check there.
