Larry, I just ran "sfc /scannow" with no help.

I cannot open Phone and Modem Options, either. (From the Control
Panel.)

Went you try to open Phone and Modem ... do you get an error?
Also is there anything in Event Viewer, when you try to open Phone and
Modem?

M

"Phone and Modem control panel cannot be opened. You may have a
problem starting telephony service."

No, I do not log an Event when I try to open "Phone and Modem Options."

However, I do have quite a few of these:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7003
Date: 6/1/2006
Time: 6:10:47 PM
User: N/A
Computer: DESKTOP2
Description:
The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the following
nonexistent service: Tapisrv

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I do not know why I have so many. I was out for two hours and logged
38 identicle errors.

Ran SpyBot and Norton. Nothing found.

Still working on this ... look for:

Routing and Remote Access

in Administrative Tools | Services.

By the way, is this out of the box system (Dell, Gateway, ...) or did you
install Windows XP?

Articles I have ben reading:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx
(see section on bottom about DSLs).
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329441

What Fax software are you using ... the one that came with Windows XP?

You mentioned 38 identical errors ... do you know if you caused them by
trying to access things needing TAPI (e.g., Phone and Modems, Dialer.exe,
....)?

So far all the articles, I have read is that when you install Windows XP and
it doesn't detect a dialup modem, it doesn't seem to install the telephony
service (or blocks it).

By the way, had you ever modified any of the Services Startup options for
some services?

Found more info.

Unless you have a modem installed (dialup), you cannot use the phone to
dial-out. If you install a backup dialup modem in order computer, I believe
when Windows Hardware wizard install support drivers, you will also install
Telephony support (giving you Phone and Modems as well).

The modem will not be in conflict with Cable modem, Windows will see it as
just another device. However, you will need to set what Network Connection
to use as default.

BTW, technically, I am not using a Cable Modem. I am running my home
network through a Linksys Router. So, I technically do not have a
modem connected to the computer.

I do have a Dial-up modem. That's what my Might Fax is running
through.

I've even scoured the XP Installation CD to try to install Telephony
and I cannot find it.

I appreciate your patience. I am going to continue trying to locate
how to install Telephony on my Services List.

I'll keep you posted. If you find anything else you would like me to
try, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mark

So in Control Panel | system | Hardware ... it shows that you have a Modem?
What type? And is their any conflict?
Do any device show up with a yellow triangle?
If you have a physically installed modem in your system, you should see a
Modem entry.
If you don't show a Modem entry ... Windows XP will not install/start modem
handling.

Did you check to see if Routing and Remotes Access shows in Services?

Did you every play with any of the settings in Services for some of the
entries?

M

mn_voyageur

Device Manager lists it as an Intel 537. No "?" or "!" Working
properly and with the Intel Driver.

Modem is Com 3. No Conflicts. (Mighty Fax, works.)

I have never tried "Routing" or "Remotes Access".

I never realized that "Services" existed until you directed me.

I'm just double-checing this:

1. Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services
2. Way down the bottom of the right pane, in the section that starts with
'T' entries (they should be in sort order), you DEFINITELY have no Telephony
entry ... Correct.

Mine are:

Task Scheduler
Started Automatic
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Disabled
Telephony
Started Manual
Telnet
Disabled
Terminal Services
Started Manual
Themes
Started Automatic

(I have Windows XP Pro ... if you do too, these should be there).

Also check for:

Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Manual
Remote Access Connection Manager
Started Manual
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Started Automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
Manual
Remote Registry
Disabled
Removable Storage
Started Automatic
Routing and Remote Access
Manual

********Note: my disabled is my settings for security reasons
You should ... on Windows XP Pro ... have these entries.

What 'T' entries do you have?

Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Manual

Looks like you have them all ... except Telephony and getting Phone and
Modems Control Panel.

My TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper is turned off for security reasons ... I'm not on a
domain ... so I don't want access NetBT processing.

Should have asked if you have a Firewall or are you using Windows
Firewall/Internet Sharing. If you have your own Firewall (Norton, McAfee),
the Windows Firewall should be off in Services.

I checked around. True you have a Intel 537 modem ... but it is a chipset
.... not an actual device adapter that blugs in a PCI slot.
You may want to check for the INtel 537 driver upgrade ... located on Intel
site. I don't know what you version is.

It seems that everything dealing with the network works for you ... except
anything that actually has to DIAL a phone number through yor phone line to
access the internet.

I'm not familiar with Might Fax ... but reading from their web-site ... did
you happen to notice if you had this problem before you installed Might Fax
or not?

One other thing you could try:

1. Control Panel | administrative Tools | Event Viewer
2. Clear logs for Applications, System, and Security
3. CLose Event Viewer, reboot in safe mode
4. Start Menu | Run enter regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\tapi3.dll
5. You will be notified that TAPI3.dll was unregister/unistalled (whatever
.... doesn't matter)
6. Start Menu | Run enter regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\tapi3.dll (this
re-registers it)
7. Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer and check
Applications, System and Security and see if any warnings/errors, the order
is important, errors/warning are bottom-to-top. Read from bottom to top.
8. If nothing apparent, clear logs again as before
9. Reboot in Normal mode
10. Imediately review logs again - bottom-to-top AFTER system has come up
totally.

Anything in any of these cases?

Sometimes you have to de-register and then re-register to get Windows to
kick start.

If still nothing, I would look at driver updates for your Chipset (Windows
Update will not tell you of these) and any issues with Might Fax (updates?
technical support .. they allow for e-mail tech support ... maybe they have
had issues with others dealing with Telephony).

Hopefully, you have NEVERED used the Windows XP Reinstall or Repair function
on XP CD.

Larry,

I am beginning to think that it might just be easier to install XP Pro
on one of my other hard drives.

Would this create a problem? I have three hard drives on my computer.
1. Original drive
2. My Documents
3. Audio and video

I did this because I wanted to be able to move all of the files that I
create to a new computer without a lot of head aches. And Audio and
Video files are so large that I recently bought a 250Gig HD to store
these files. (Family pictures, videos of the kids, etc...)

My problem is that I have a lot of software that I have collected over
the years and I woud hate to have to reload all of it. It woud take a
day or more.

On the other hand, have you dealt with MS Support? If they can get
Telephony back on my list of Services for $35.00, it might not be a bad
idea. If they are just going to tell me to start from scratch, I don't
need to spend $35.00 for that.
